Information Technology Career

November 9th, 2009

So you want to work in the Information Technology field? In this article i’ll provide some advice to those seeking employment in this field. Keep in mind these are my opinions, others may agree or disagree.

Mechanic or Engineer?

The first question to answer is which direction do you want to go? Typically there are two types of IT Staff. Those who administer and and those who create. What do I mean by this? Ask yourself if you’d rather sit in a cube and write software, create and maintain databases and develop applications, or would you rather install software, manage an e-mail system or create a network or remote access solution.

The two areas are usually comprised of employees with very different mind sets.

The administrators tend to follow a career path that goes something like this. IT Intern or PC Technician performing break/fix tasks on PC’s. As they advance they may manage the larger rollout of operating systems or software applications. Keep in mind the focus is on more mechanical or problem solving tasks. Later in their career they may move on to network or server administration. The larger the impact of a mistake the further up the ladder in their career. Eventually they may manage a team of other administrators or perform some consulting services.

Education

If you are on the applications path than a Computer Science major is going to get you headed in the right direction. Often companies hire right out of college because they have been teaching login and application development for decades.

Once your in your in. Until your in your way out….

When I got into this field ten years ago I took a pay cut to move from my sales position to my PC Technician position. This is because it is VERY difficult to get hired if you’ve never been hired. There are so many great applicants that there is no reason to take a chance on someone who only can tell you what they know. Multiply this statement X 10 with the economic downturn after the dot com boom. So get whatever resume worthy experience and references you can as fast as you can. To land even the most entry level job you’ll need it.

How to get experience?

Internships are a great way to get in the door anywhere. These are positions that everyone understands and they are the mark of a hungry student. If you can get an internship (preferably paid) at a company so much the better. If you can’t start volunteering for any organization that will take your skills. Churches and schools or charity’s are a good start. The key is to get something on your resume that says you’ve been in the business.

Usa Technology
Usa Technology

More research and development is put into military technology and innovation then any other industry or field. The evolution of the battlefield has occurred right in front of us, yet many people are unaware of how advanced the weaponry of the United States army and its allies has become. The battlefields our troops currently fight on are occupied by drones known as MQ-9 reapers and Predators, as well as a variety of unmanned land vehicles such as the SWORDS weapon system. Also we can’t forget about the advances in Fighter technology with the F-22 Raptor being on the forefront of aviation innovation.

The evolution of military technology has allowed the US military to move many of its troops out of harms way by implementing precision weaponry coupled with unmanned technologies. In the near future our battlefields could look like something from the movie Terminator with robots fighting each other and actually operating on artificial intelligence. The machines deployed in unfriendly territory will actually be linked to each other and communicate with soldiers and commanders to warn them of enemy positions or suspicious activities. Also systems like the YAL-1A airborne laser that the United States air-force has developed will keep our skies clear of ballistic missile threats.

Not only have the ground and air reconnaissances and attack vehicles been converted to unmanned applications, rifle and gun technology has developed at an incredible pace with applications such as the as50 British accuracy Sniper Rifle or the objective individual combat weapon. The Military technology that the soldier will be working with in the future will include upgraded ammunition and assault rifles as well as better and lighter armor such as the Dragon Skin system. There are many more new weapons system applications that seem lifetimes away but are being developed as we speak.

Polymer Technologies

Polymer
Polymer

If you have ever lifted a traditional lead and acid, wet cell car battery, you know how incredibly heavy they are when they are fully charged. Not very big, they have a dense heaviness that is, if you will pardon the pun, shocking to most people. The problem with their weight is simple; the heavier each part of the car is, the less efficiently it will burn fuel. Lightening the automobile has been part of the goal of car makers for years. The steel reinforced tanks of yesteryear are not driven anymore. Those beasts have been replaced with more fuel efficient, lightweight cars in most cases. Now, as electric and hybrid cars become more and more mainstream, the eco-conscious will make the switch. Polymer storage devices could hold play an important role in energy storage.

A hybrid car uses batteries and gasoline to work. For instance, when a hybrid is coasting down a hill, the mechanical energy is converted to electricity which is then used to charge the battery for times when it is needed. Using the polymer electric storage system will allow more energy to be stored without the added bulk and weight of a traditional battery. Polymers are lighter and far more flexible than any other energy storage system seen so far.

Polymers are blended with ceramic particles to “improve energy density” (Physorg.com). The ferroelectric polymer has a higher breakdown strength while the ceramics have higher “permittivities.” In plain English, the polymer blends formulated by scientists will improve the maximum electric fields that the composite can store without decreasing. The ceramics actually allow the storage to take place.

Other uses for these polymer blends could eventually include computers, fold-able screens, and other electronic applications. Polymers can be processed at room temperature, meaning no high heat processes to worry about, they are easy to make and easy to manipulate.

Right now the only problem in dealing with the polymers is the actual blending of the ceramics and the polymer materials themselves. If they are not mixed correctly they will not store energy correctly. The ceramic particles also have individual issues when being mixed in with the polymers. All issues with the mixing must be handled at the same time or the resulting storage system will be doomed to poor performance and inevitable failure.

Spectrum Technologies

August 2nd, 2009

When people want to examine waveforms emanating from an object, a very useful tool is a spectrum analyzer. The person will just hook the system up and then wait for the hardware to get the readout and then print the results for review.

There are a lot of spectrum analyzers in the market. If the person is having a hard time thinking of what brand to try, then perhaps using something from Agilent technologies can help make that happen.

The company has large units such as the E4447A that measures complex RF and millimeter waves up from 42.98 Ghz to 325 Ghz. The price for one of these things is expensive and fetches for more than $60,000 a piece.

If the individual doesn’t have the budget, then perhaps something cheaper will suffice such as the 8560EC portable spectrum analyzer that can only measure until 2.9 Ghz, which is half the price of the bigger unit.

The E4411B-BAS ESA-L Basic is another interesting model. It can measure from 9 to 1.5Ghz and is very lightweight. This will only cost $8,000 and will work well for those who are just starting out.

Some stores sell these products but if the person wants other options, then it will be a good idea to visit the company website and select from the models available until the right one is found.

The company accepts orders online and after paying for this using one’s credit card, this will be delivered within 6 to 8 weeks that comes with a manual and a warranty.

If the customer has any problems with the product, there is a customer service hotline that the person can call so that a representative could offer assistance.

There are those who are still hesitant about the price of a brand new spectrum analyzer. If that is the case, then the company can give a better deal by offering second hand units that have been returned or this can be traded for something the owner might have that is no longer useful.

There are other places where the individual can also get a second hand unit from Agilent. There is Ebay and other auctions sites as well as junkyards that may have one lying around that will need some repair.

Spectrum analyzers can be used in checking the sound system in the entertainment room or in the car. The samples mentioned can be used either for work or for other functions.

Impact Technologies

July 17th, 2009

In low tech local environment where an overwhelming majority is still struggling to access and find required information, there are some high end-users who are already complaining of information overload.

Busy executives, decision makers and other people taking advantage of computing in work and meaningful pursuits need all the quality information they can get. They turn to the web because it has amassed huge amounts of information in almost all areas of human activities. But what is information in the first place? Technically speaking, “information is stimuli that have meaning in some context for its receiver. When information is entered into and stored in a computer, it is generally referred to as data – information translated into a form that is more convenient to move or process. When information is packaged or used for understanding or doing something, it is known as knowledge – to an enterprise or an individual, the possession of information or the ability to quickly locate it.” For the purpose here, I think the term ‘information’ is the correct description of some of what is available on the web, rather than knowledge or wisdom. Document Technologies

June 20th, 2009

It is essential that the goal is not forgotten when entertaining the thought of implementing new technologies, and it is likewise important to begin thinking in terms of enterprise document management because this title fully describes the concept of what was intended originally when the first computer was purchased. The concept of email, however, did not exist when that computer was initially bought, and as a result, it seems that the business world still forgets to include it today as an actual component of their document management systems. Yet each email message is, in itself, a document. A document is an instrument of communication. This instrument of communication requires a conduit or distribution mechanism, i.e., email system, just like other documents require fax, mail or an email system. Does it not make sense that the entire document creation, distribution and storage process be consolidated and managed simultaneously for maximum streamlining effect?

Because business document management needs have grown due to increased productivity following the advent of the computer, businesses have subsequently become reliant upon the computer. Most mid- and large-scale companies now employ their own IT staff, while the smaller companies outsource for their computer needs. The industry is enormous, and it is incredibly complicated and confusing to most business professionals born before 1970. Consequently, the prospect of analyzing the computer and document-related options for operational streamlining can cause most to suffer paralysis when it comes time to make a choice. Read more…

alpha technologies

June 12th, 2009

Brain waves that cycle through our heads between the frequencies of eight and twelve hertz per second are considered alpha brain waves. A lot of people want to learn how to increase the amount of alpha brain waves in their mind and other people don’t even know what they are. If you are a person that wants to increase your alpha activity, then why do you want to do it? Is it because you are hoping to calm your nerves from constant anxiety and stress? Is it because you want to have access to more inner creativity?

Alpha Technologies

Alpha Technologies

Whatever your reason for wanting to increase your alpha brainwaves, it is probably a good one. The reason that so many people are trying to increase their alpha waves is because these are considered to be the healthiest waves that can be experienced. People that are generally in a happy mood and that have stable emotional patterns are usually in alpha. This state feels very calm to be in and you really are able to appreciate the world around you in a deeper manner.

How will you know if you are in the alpha state? You will know because you will not feel one bit of stress or anxiety flowing through your body. You will be very calm and maybe even a little bit drowsy at times. When we get caught up in high beta brain waves from too much stress or external stimulation, it would definitely be beneficial to take a second and relax by increasing your alpha brain activity. Information Technology Project Management

May 29th, 2009

First of all, the project manager must ensure the project is 100% complete. Young (2003, p256) noticed that in the closeout phase “it is quite common to find a number of outstanding minor tasks from early key stages still unfinished. They are not critical and have not impeded progress, yet they must be completed”. Furthermore, some projects need continuing service and support even after they are finished, such as IT projects. While it is helpful when this demand is part of the original statement of requirements, it is often part of the contract closeout. Rosenau and Githens (2005, p300) suggest that “the contractor should view continuing service and support as an opportunity and not merely as an obligation” since they can both learn from each other by exchanging ideas.

The project review comes usually comes after all the project systems are closed. It is a bridge that connects two projects that come one after another. Project reviews transfer not only tangible knowledge such as numerical data of cost and time but also the tacit knowledge which is hard to document. ‘Know-how’ and more important ‘know-why’ are passed on to future projects in order to eliminate the need for project managers to ‘invent the wheel’ from scratch every time they start a new project. The reuse of existing tools and experience can be expanded to different project teams of the same organization in order to enhance project results (Bucero, 2005). Reviews have a holistic nature which investigate the impact of the project on the environment as a whole. Read more…

Air Technologies

Lighter Than Air Technology

Lighter than air technology was very popular at the beginning of the twentieth century, but the Hindenburg disaster in 1937 caused people to lose interest in this type of aircraft.

Since then there has been new research and development for both civilian and military applications. Innovations in materials and other technology has caused a renewed interest in lighter than air devices.

Lighter Than Air Aircraft

All lighter than air vehicles use a lifting gas to provide their lift. The most common types of lifting gas used (since hydrogen was banned after 1937) are helium and hot air. Blimps use helium and large balloons use hot air. One thousand cubic feet of hot air has a lifting capacity of approximately twenty pounds. One thousand cubic feet of helium will lift approximately three times that of hot air or sixty pounds. Hydrogen has a lifting capacity that is approximately ten percent higher than helium.

Common Applications

Blimps and balloons are usually what come to mind when someone mentions lighter than air aircraft. These are unique and large enough to draw attention. They have applications in aerial photography, aerial advertising, surveillance and sports events. Radio controlled Read more…
